Creative Use of Light – Will Clay

Will Clay will discuss the quality of light and the best way to photograph it by using exposure and filtration. Most scenes the photographer encounters can be divided into these basic categories of light: before sunrise / after sunset, mid-day sun; and overcast. Knowledge of the properties of light is essential for the nature photographer.

Know Your Camera Workshop – Michael Kobe
Location: Wolf Camera, Orland Square Mall
Michael Kobe will present this introductory-level workshop, a hands-on learning experience. He will present a slide show about basic camera functions, stopping periodically to allow the workshop attendees to find those functions on their own cameras and also take pictures to demonstrate certain principles, such as white balance, ISO, F-stop, and proper exposure. Members should bring their own cameras and camera manuals. The plan is to include several more experienced club members in the audience to help guide the workshop attendees.

Art VS. Technology – Hank Erdmann
The process of creating an image, at least a great image, is much more than pointing and shooting. Creating art, at least photographic art, is done in the camera. And it is done to its greatest and fullest when that image is made the best it can be in the field and not “fixed” afterwards in the computer. Today we use digital cameras for the most part, but whether we still shoot film or record pixels, our images invariably end up as digital files. This program speaks to the process of creating an image, one that is more than technically correct—one that is artistic. An image is more than mere subject matter, it is an artwork molded by the way we see through the process of our own lives as it connects with light, mood, and subject. Learn how you can capture images that express your artistic vision. I speak to using technology to accomplish that goal without becoming slaves to that same technology.

Mike MacDonald, internationally recognized prairie photographer, will share his secrets for creating breathtaking landscape images of Chicago’s rare habitats. You don’t need to travel to distant lands to find dramatic scenes. In fact, they’re right in your own backyard: in local wetlands, woodlands, savannas, and the ever-changing prairie. Mike once posed this question to himself, “How can I make photographs of the flat prairie feel as dramatic, powerful, and three-dimensional as pictures of The West?” Over several years, Mike focused all of his energy and creativity on answering this very question. One of the many rewards for solving the prairie puzzle was to become Chicago Wilderness Magazine’s most prominent published photographer. How To Use Your Flash More Effectively – Stan Kotecki
Stan Kotecki, a professional photographer and member of the DesPlaines Camera Club, will share what he knows about electronic flash. He will show us the his equipment and demonstrate how to use flash more effectively when photographing people and objects. With over 20 years of experience, Stan works as a commercial and advertising photographer, skilled in shooting both in the studio and on location. He says, “It’s very gratifying when you are able to add an element of drama to a realistic situation or subject. To capture an image that makes a viewer pause and take a longer or second look is real success.”

Creativity, Passion and Communication – Will Clay
Landscape photographer Will Clay will present a two-part program. In the first half, he will define passionate creativity, illustrating it in terms of a Creativity Triangle. Creativity leads to Passion which leads to Communication, that is, communicating the expression of our creativity. Clay includes examples of creative geniuses such as Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, as well as a number of musicians such as Beethoven, Bach, Dave Brubeck, and the Beatles. The second half of the program probes the question,
“You have this passionate creativity to express, now what do you do with it?” He uses several photographers as examples, including Ansel Adams, Eliot Porter, Herbie Hancock, and himself. The program concludes with the advice of Joseph Campbell, “Follow your bliss.”
