Close-up Photography Workshop

Location: Vicki Cobb’s home, Orland Park
Fee:  $15.00 (includes lunch)

Stan Kotecki, pro-photographer, will conduct a workshop that teaches several ways of getting close to your subject.  His instruction, supplemented by tips from our own Bruce Dawson, will be followed by hands-on practice both indoors and out.  Indoor photography would consist of shooting tabletop set-ups that you arrange.  Bring the subjects you would like to photograph, including but not limited to flowers (store-bought or hand picked), sea shells, buttons, coins, jewelry, and old wooden spools. Even bring small items you’d like to sell on e-Bay!  Outdoor photography subjects may include plants in the adjacent woods  and perennials in Vicki’s garden, or possibly birds, toads and butterflies.  Use your imagination!  Prerequisite:  You should know how to use your camera and must bring whatever equipment you own for achieving close-ups.  Members will be sharing, so no worries, just bring what you have on the list.  An asterisk means it’s required (a must-have).

*DSLR camera or a point & shoot that gets close (up to about 12″)
*tripod (be sure you know how to turn off VR on your camera)

Saturdays in July

Summer Judging Seminars

Foresters Camera club will be running a seminar for those interested in becoming judges or learning to become a better judge. It will be held in two separate identical sessions, each consisting of two consecutive Saturdays in July. The first session will be held on Saturday, July 7th and Saturday, July 14th from 1:00 – 4:00 PM each day, and the second session will be held on Saturday, July 21st and Saturday, July 28th , also from 1:00 – 4:00 PM each day. All sessions will be held at the Vogt Visual Arts Center,  located at 17420 South 67th Court in Tinley Park, which is a handicapped-accessible facility.

Material to be covered will include
• what to look for in a photograph,
• bad points and good points in a photograph,
• actual practice judging on photos that have already been judged,
• familiarization with the scoring equipment,
• the scoring procedure,
• critiquing,
and many other topics of interest to judges.

We will also be covering specific categories such as Nature, Photojournalism, Alterations of Reality, and others. Experienced and new judges will be on hand to answer all questions, and hand-outs on judging criteria and scoring criteria will be given to each attendee. There will be a $2 fee to attend the sessions.

If you would like to learn about judging with the intent to possibly become a judge or would just like to find out more about how the judges score photos and you are a member of a south Chicago or south suburban club, then please join us. Seating will be limited to 25 people per session, so pre-registration will be necessary. Please specify which session you will be attending. Checks should be made payable to Foresters Camera Club and should be sent with the registration form to Lynn Polyak, 7848 West 80th Place, Bridgeview, IL 60455-1425. Registration forms will be sent to all of the south suburban clubs in the first week of May. If response is larger than we think, a third session may be planned for later in the year, possibly in September.

Creativity & The Power of Passion – Will Clay

Landscape photographer Will Clay will present a three-part program, relating the power of passion to art, music, and photography.  He will define passionate creativity, illustrating it with a Creativity Triangle.  Creativity leads to Passion, and finally to the expression of Creativity.  Clay includes examples of artists such as Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, as well as a number of musicians such as Beethoven, Bach, Dave Brubeck, and the Beatles.   Finally, he shows the passion of creativity in the works of several photographers, including Ansel Adams, Eliot Porter, Alfred Steiglitz , and himself.  He will probe the question, “You have this passionate creativity, now what do you do with it?” The program concludes with the advice of Joseph Campbell, “Follow your bliss.”
